Back in 2025, as a fresh graduate from AltSchool Africa, I began sharing my journey and showcasing my work. Fast forward to October, a viral LinkedIn post about my journey caught the attention of the founder, who reached out to offer me a job. Initially, I wasn't aware it was an internship. During a call, he mentioned sending an email for an interview. After the interview, he contacted me again about the offer. He asked about my expected monthly income if I were to work elsewhere daily, and I estimated around ₦50-60k, sometimes less. He used this information to determine my salary. He then explained I'd be working with his startup and would initially be paid ₦60-70k, with potential increases based on performance and improvement. Anything earned would be in addition to my salary. I joined the following week after signing the contract and documents. At the end of my first month, I received a salary of ₦50k, as agreed. I worked diligently as an intern for four months, pushing numerous updates and new features. When the four months concluded, I reached out to him, reminding him that the contract was for three months and inquiring about a salary increase or a full-time position. He initially didn't reply, but later suggested working an additional month, after which they would decide. After five months as an intern earning ₦50k (which barely covered data costs), he messaged me, stating I still needed to improve. However, he offered to increase my pay to ₦80k. I initially demanded ₦100k, but eventually accepted ₦80k due to the learning opportunities. After eight months, I was laid off because the startup no longer required my role. This was heartbreaking, as I had envisioned growing with the company, even after requesting a move to the marketing department. However, I trust that everything happens for a reason.
